The starting salary is £87,561 - £98,431 per annum, for a 36-hour week.
Join us as the Assistant Director for Planning and Development to lead transformative projects impacting Surrey communities. You will manage major planning applications, promote sustainability, heritage, and infrastructure, and influence local government planning. This position offers an opportunity to shape Surrey's future and be part of a forward-thinking leadership team.
You will also collaborate with the Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) Place workstream to ensure a smooth transition for Vesting Day (1st April 2027), when Surrey County Council will be replaced by new authorities.
The role requires travel around the County and occasionally outside it. Our hybrid working model allows flexibility to work remotely when not attending physical locations.

About The Role
You will oversee planning applications related to Surrey County Council, including internal applications for the capital program and major applications for minerals and waste sites. You will handle enforcement of planning matters and lead services like Transport Development Planning, Historic Environment Planning, Flood Authority, and Ecology roles. You will also ensure the service is prepared for local government reorganization.
Reporting to the Director for Environment and Planning, you will be part of the Senior Management Team, requiring collaboration skills and extensive planning experience.

Applicants Must Demonstrate
- Degree or equivalent qualification, management experience, and Royal Town Planning membership.
- Understanding of political and operational factors affecting the role.
- Leadership skills to inspire and develop teams.
- Strong communication skills for stakeholder engagement.
- Political sensitivity and commitment to local democracy.
