Make critical IT feel effortless.
We’re hiring an Assistant Director of Infrastructure & Operations on behalf of the RSPB. You’ll set the 5-year roadmap, modernise the estate, and raise service quality across infrastructure, service desk, and tech operations. With board-level backing, you’ll have the freedom to shape sourcing strategy and the mandate to deliver lasting change.
What you’ll do
- Publish a 5-year Infrastructure & Ops roadmap aligned to digital transformation.
- Stabilise service: embed ITIL, strengthen change/incident/problem management, and improve SLAs.
- Modernise platforms: progress data-centre moves, consolidate storage/DAM/MAM, accelerate pragmatic Azure adoption.
- Harden security with ISO 27001 and Cyber Essentials Plus practices.
- Improve network reliability for remote reserves and field technologies (e.g. camera traps, Starlink contexts).
- Define sourcing strategy and deliver early supplier value.
What you’ll bring
- Senior leadership in IT operations/service with credibility to challenge infra and service specialists.
- Experience delivering infrastructure modernisation, cost reduction, and improved user experience.
- ITIL-led service management and strong change discipline.
- Hybrid/cloud (Azure preferred), network architecture, and end-user computing at scale.
- Security and risk awareness, operating to ISO 27001/Cyber Essentials Plus standards.
- Vendor management and sourcing strategy expertise.
- Leadership that unites teams, raises technical standards, and lowers conflict.
Useful extras: DAM/MAM exposure, sustainability-linked IT decisions, not-for-profit or public-sector experience.
The offer
- Home-based across the UK, with expenses for monthly travel.
- Flexible patterns (condensed week/fortnight considered).
- Salary £80,026–£89,569 plus full benefits.
- A rare opportunity to lead board-backed change and deliver impact — from core services in the office to the connectivity that keeps remote reserves online.
