What You'll Do The Aviation and Maritime Safety Engineering Director will manage and provide technical direction to a small team of safety engineering specialists within the Engineering Integration and Delivery group who are responsible for all engineering aspects from initial concept to introduction of service of Aviation & Maritime Safety communication systems. The postholder will focus on the evolution of Viasats SwiftBroadband Safety infrastructure, based on a detailed understanding of the new and emerging communications and surveillance requirements for Air Traffic Management. He/she will provide support to the technical/management lead for IRIS Phases 3 and 4 that will include possible transition to a GEO+LEO terminal. Over time, additionally building his/her knowledge of maritime safety requirements to become a focal point for the technical development of the new maritime safety services and products. The role requires an in-depth understanding of the regulatory and industry standards for safety communication systems, and requires close working with industry partners within the Iris consortium, including aircraft manufacturers (i.e. Airbus and Boeing), avionics suppliers, and air traffic communication service providers that provide message processing and ground connectivity to ATC centres, airline operational services and Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs). This role will also require technical understanding of urban air mobility requirements in congested airspace. Additionally, the role requires interaction with the regulators and standards bodies who set the communication and surveillance requirements. The role will represent Viasats engineering lead in meetings with suppliers and must be capable of dealing confidently with experts in similar and adjacent disciplines. Viasat, Inc. seeks an experienced chief systems engineer for this Directorship within the Engineering Integration and Delivery group, in close cooperation with the IRIS Program Manager and PMO, the Product group and the Aviation Business Unit. The day-to-day- Lead and influence and aviation industry avionics systems standardisation at ICAO, AEEC, RTCA, and EUROCAE industry groups, maintaining a constant watching brief on ATM regulatory technical developments and evolving system requirements pertaining to both satcom networks and terminals.
- Compile system design requirements for next generation aviation and maritime safety service developments, including urban air mobility (UAM).
- Produce system concepts, candidate architectures and conduct trade-off studies in development of the future aviation safety datalink networks.
- Create detailed design specifications and supplier Statements of Work for use in competitive procurements for evolution of Viasats safety service infrastructure.
- Lead the definition of technical solutions, and compile costs and benefits for internal business cases
- Manage suppliers for implementation, verification, and change management of the satcom network safety service infrastructure.
- Define/refine the operational model in planning for safety service introduction readiness, initial operations (e.g. customer Beta testing), and in-life service management metrics (KPIs) needed to demonstrate compliance with performance standards.
- Manage the Commercial Service Introduction (CSI) of new aviation and maritime safety products and services
- Form strong technical relationships with peers at satcom avionic manufacturers, airframers, ESA, and Viasat service providers.
- Degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering, Physics, Computer or Communications science, or equivalent, and 8+ years of professional relevant experience
- Experience of supporting aviation or maritime safety services, ideally involving datalink and/or satcom-based systems
- Technically fluent in telecommunications technologies, an understanding of IP-based mobile networking technologies and ideally satellite or mobile communications systems
- Strong analytical capability, able to conduct system engineering and technology trade-offs
- Strong inter-personal skills including the ability to establish and maintain relationships and trust
- Ability to work in a complex, international matrix organization alongside 3rd-parties
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.

- Experience in the identification and capture of IT functional and non-functional requirements for large, complex projects
- Data mining and analytics techniques
- Knowledge of Viasat and other satellite communications systems.
- Avionics development
- Knowledge of aeronautical Air Traffic Service standards and processes; ICAO, ARINC, RTCA, EUROCAE, Certification, especially Aeronautical Telecommunications Network (ATN), and existing Air Traffic DataLink Service standards.
- Delivery of Air Traffic Communications service as an ANSP or communications supplier
