Deputy Director, Museums and Cultural Property - 1 year maternity coverJoin to apply for the Deputy Director, Museums and Cultural Property - 1 year maternity cover role at Department for Culture, Media and SportThe Culture directorate is the Government lead for culture policy development and it sponsors 22 Arms Length Bodies that support the growth and delivery of these sectors. We have around 85 staff primarily based in London and Manchester. This role is to lead the Museums and Cultural Property team:The Museums branch is responsible for museums policy in England, including through Arts Council England, the sector development agency. This includes areas such as collections, audiences, skills and workforce development, economic recovery and resilience, as well as managing a number of grant funding initiatives. The team sponsor 15 museum Arms’ Length Bodies including our largest national museums and galleries.The Cultural Property branch leads responsibility for the preservation and protection of cultural property. This includes oversight of statutory and tax schemes for areas such as treasure, spoliation (Nazi looted art), export licensing, the gifting of objects to the nation, the prevention of illicit trade, as well as leading on restitution policy and related diplomacy matters. It also leads the Government’s relationship with the UK art market.Job summaryWe are running an information session where prospective applicants can find out more about the role. This will be hosted virtually by Hannah Malik, and will take place on:The session will be an opportunity to hear more about the role, the team and wider directorate and the department.It will also be an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have about the application, and the interview and assessment process.Responsibilities for the role include:Leadership of c 30 person team;With the MCP Senior Management Team, set strategic objectives for the team across policy, people and programmes;Development of close and strong relationships with stakeholders across the sector and with our 15 Arms’ Length Bodies (ALBs);Senior sponsorship for 15 museum ALBs including oversight of governance and financial stewardship of these bodies who are in receipt of approx £400m pa.Close working with Ministers, including oral and written briefings, and regular visits;Developing and delivering across MCP policy, working closely with Arts Council England as development body for the sector and delivery body for cultural property schemes which includes the provision of secretariat for two statutory committees;Senior Officer Responsibilities for several key grants and funding streams to the museums sector;Representation of the sector and UK art market both within the department, on cross-government initiatives and on international policy and diplomatic issues;Active participation in leadership of wider Culture Directorate, through participation in the senior leadership team and leadership of cross Directorate people engagement activity.Person specificationThe Ideal candidate will have the following key skills and experience.Leadership: A track record of driving delivery and providing visible and inclusive leadership, with a proven ability to develop a motivated, engaged, diverse and high-performing workforce. A track record of corporate leadership contributing to wider priorities, and an ability to lead a team working in highly-scrutinised environments;Communicating and Influencing: Highly-developed written and oral communication skills, with the ability to brief on complex and often sensitive issues, presenting in a clear and concise manner and identifying key messages, with a proven track record in skillful navigation through senior stakeholders across government, and externally;Making Effective Decisions: Excellent evidence-based strategic and analytical skills, with experience of formulating, leading and implementing strategies, policies and programmes, including when under pressure, and a proven understanding of delivering value for money;Seeing the Big Picture: Highly-developed understanding of the political environment, including a broader understanding of how to operate outside of the immediate business area or organisation, and credibility to act as a trusted adviser to ministers and senior officials and stakeholders; andWorking Together: Outstanding ability to forge excellent relationships and adept at successfully influencing, challenging and negotiating, to gain the confidence of key senior stakeholders.Previous experience of sponsorship and/or working with arms length bodiesPrevious experience as Senior Officer Responsible for grant funding and/or capital programmes.Understanding of the ethos and work of the museum sector. #J-18808-Ljbffr
