About Defence Infrastructure Organisation
The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) is at the heart of Defence, enabling our people to live, work, train and deploy around the world. Managing £28bn of assets with a £3.3bn annual budget, our 2,500-strong team operates across the UK and overseas, delivering the infrastructure that underpins national security. We are trusted to build, maintain and transform the Defence estate — from homes and training facilities to critical operational bases. Through Major Programmes and Projects (MPP), we deliver large-scale, complex programmes for the UK’s Front-Line Commands and US Visiting Forces. We are proud to play a vital role supporting the Continuous At Sea Deterrent through close partnerships with the Royal Navy, Submarine Delivery Agency and Defence Nuclear Organisation. As part of the National Armaments Director Group, DIO drives innovation, collaboration and modernisation to strengthen Defence infrastructure for today and for the future.
About the role
The Deputy Director Nuclear Infrastructure (Major Projects & Programmes) leads the delivery of a multi-billion-pound portfolio of major infrastructure programmes across the Defence Nuclear Enterprise (DNE) on the UK Defence Estate. Acting as the single point of leadership for DIO’s responsibilities at Clyde, this role also drives senior coherence across DIO’s wider DNE efforts, working closely with key stakeholders including the Royal Navy, Defence Nuclear Organisation and Submarine Delivery Agency. This pivotal role will grow DIO’s capability to meet rising demand in a highly regulated environment, leading the creation of the new nuclear "baseline organisation." With flexibility and significant delegated authority within an intelligent client function, you will champion continuous improvement, consistency in programme delivery, and safe, professional outcomes to budget, schedule and performance expectations. As a key part of the MPP Senior Leadership Team, the role will spearhead transformation and improvement initiatives across the Directorate and DIO.
The person
Are you ready to take on one of the most exciting leadership challenges in major infrastructure delivery? We’re looking for a dynamic, visionary leader with a proven track record of driving large-scale, complex programmes in highly regulated, safety-critical environments — ideally with projects valued over £100m. You’ll have experience leading high-performing teams, managing budgets over £500m, and delivering real impact across a complex Tier 1 supply chain. With exceptional stakeholder management skills, you’ll influence, challenge and collaborate across organisational boundaries to achieve shared success. If you’re passionate about building capability, growing teams, and shaping the future of Defence infrastructure, we want to hear from you! Professional qualifications (e.g. CEng, RICS, CIOB) and experience developing a Nuclear Baseline are highly desirable.
