Overview

The Charity Commission seeks a Director of Legal and Accountancy Services. This is a senior role offering inspirational leadership to the Legal and Accountancy teams and to the Commission as a whole. As an independent regulator, the Charity Commission works to enable the charity sector to be its best, but also to prevent, challenge and pursue when things go wrong, upholding and enforcing charity law.

The role provides scope to influence the regulatory landscape and charity law in England and Wales, upholding the Commission’s reputation for fair, independent and balanced regulation. You will be involved in developing Parliamentary bills, secondary legislation and Charity Commission guidance to develop the law and policy affecting charities and charity regulation in a creative, proportionate and innovative way. It is a key ambassadorial role, representing the Commission with UK Government Ministers, the Attorney General and their Office, international regulators and other bodies, the Charity Law Association, and other high-profile external stakeholder groups, including major charities.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee high-profile and complex legal cases and legal policy issues.
  • Provide advice to the Chief Executive, the Board and Board Committees on difficult and sensitive legal issues.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing team within the Legal and Accountancy Services directorate.
  • Foster innovation within the Commission and apply a risk-based approach to achieve positive outcomes and drive change to charity law to keep it fit for purpose in a changing world.
  • Engage as a regulator and ambassador with stakeholders including government ministers, regulators, professional bodies, and major charities.

Qualifications and experience

  • Inspirational and experienced leader with strong expertise in charity law, public law, regulatory law, or practice law.
  • Experience in influencing policy development and managing complex legal issues in a public/regulatory context.
