Our vision is to create a world in which each person living with the Ehlers-Danlos syndromes and hypermobility spectrum disorders has the right treatment and care at the right time for their specific needs.ResponsibilitiesThe Events Director provides strategic, creative, and operational leadership for all Society events. This position drives the vision, design, and delivery of international conferences, educational programs, and community gatherings that inspire engagement and amplify global impact. The Director leads a dynamic team, fosters professional growth, and builds a culture of collaboration, accountability, and inclusion. They oversee departmental strategy, budgets, and performance while ensuring all events reflect The Society’s values of accessibility, equity, and excellence. This leadership role requires strong strategic insight, sound fiscal judgment, and the ability to motivate teams toward ambitious goals that advance The Society’s mission and global reputation.Key Responsibilities / Essential FunctionsStrategic and Creative Leadership: Define and execute the long-term strategy for The Society’s global events portfolio, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities. Design event concepts, objectives, and themes that reflect The Society’s vision and engage diverse audiences. Provide final approval of event goals, budgets, and deliverables. Oversee CME application and abstract submission processes for professional and scientific programs. Drive innovation across formats and technologies to enhance accessibility and participant experience. Represent the department within the Executive team, contributing to cross-organizational strategy and planning.Financial and Contract Oversight: Lead financial planning and resource allocation for the department. Develop and manage budgets for large-scale events, maintaining transparency and fiscal responsibility. Negotiate and finalize contracts with venues, vendors, and suppliers. Oversee income generation strategies in collaboration with the Development Director, maximizing event sponsorships and fundraising outcomes. Review AV RFPs, proposals, and contracts to ensure quality and cost efficiency.Departmental Leadership and Team Management: Line manage the events team, setting clear objectives and fostering a culture of trust, inclusion, and innovation. Lead team check-ins, 1:1s, and project briefings, ensuring clarity, collaboration, and accountability. Support staff development through coaching, mentoring, and growth opportunities. Oversee departmental project boards, RACI matrices, and risk assessments. Ensure effective communication across departments and alignment with organizational timelines. Champion DEI and accessibility in team practices and event design.Operational and Program Excellence: Direct all stages of event delivery, ensuring operational excellence and high-quality participant experiences. Oversee scheduling, site selection, speaker coordination, accessibility planning, and vendor management. Review KPIs and post-event evaluations to assess outcomes and guide strategic improvements. Coordinate debriefs and sustainability assessments for continuous improvement. Maintain a proactive approach to identifying risks and developing mitigation strategies.External Relations and Representation: Serve as a senior representative of The Society at conferences and events, strengthening partnerships and building strategic alliances. Coordinate high-level communications with venues, sponsors, vendors, and other key stakeholders. Promote The Society’s visibility and reputation in international events and education sectors.Under normal conditions, this role is a fully remote position, working from home. However, due to the international nature of The Society’s work, staff may be required to travel to company events, meetings, and conferences as well as some weekend work.RequirementsEducation & KnowledgeDemonstrated experience leading large-scale international events and programs with budgets exceeding £500k.Strong record of strategic planning, creative direction, and stakeholder management.Expertise in contract negotiations and vendor relations.Experience with CME-accredited or professional education programs.Strong collaborative and leadership capabilities, characterized by a clear and confident decision-making demeanor.Communication & Interpersonal SkillsExcellent written and verbal communication skills, coupled with strong interpersonal abilities.Proven track record of effectiveness in contract negotiations.Proficient in compiling and delivering clear and impactful reports to various stakeholders, both internal and external.Professional ExperienceProficiency in utilizing event management technology and tools.Extensive experience crafting and designing events and programs, encompassing themes, messages, branding, content, and innovative approaches to enhance audience engagement and interaction.Outstanding project management abilities, adept at handling multiple timelines, deadlines, and tasks within a fast-paced collaborative environment.Exceptional problem-solving skills, with a talent for devising solutions and surmounting challenges.Knowledge of GDPR and HIPAA regulations is preferred, and training will be provided.Proficient in using Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) as well as Monday.com, Zoho Voice, Zoom & Teams.Workstyle & FlexibilityMust be able to work with colleagues and stakeholders across different time zones globally, which may occasionally include early morning or late evening meetings.The ability to work in a virtual team setting and work independently.Ability to occasionally work evenings and weekends.Work Environment and Travel RequirementsMust be eligible to work in the US/UK without sponsorship.Stable internet connection required for video calls & cloud-based services as this is a fully remote role.Ability to attend one in-person retreat annually (UK).Ability to travel to other in-person meetings and events as required.Diversity StatementThe Ehlers-Danlos Society’s commitment to diversity and inclusion is driven by the four pillars of our mission: C.A.R.E. - providing care, access, research and education in all that we do.
