An exciting opportunity has arisen for a strategic and visionary leader to take on the role of Director of Sustainable Development. This senior position is responsible for leading the development and delivery of sustainability, planning, infrastructure, and environmental strategies that support long-term economic and social growth. The role involves overseeing a diverse portfolio including climate change, planning policy, transport and infrastructure, building control, waste management, and fleet operations. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping and implementing a net-zero carbon strategy and driving inclusive, sustainable development across the region. Key Responsibilities
Lead the strategic planning and delivery of sustainability and climate change initiatives. Oversee planning policy, development management, and major regeneration projects. Manage transport planning, highways, fleet operations, and waste services. Provide expert advice on environmental sustainability, infrastructure, and planning matters. Build and maintain strong partnerships with government bodies, businesses, and community stakeholders. Ensure compliance with statutory obligations and deliver high-quality, efficient services. Represent the organisation at regional and national levels to influence policy and promote strategic objectives. Essential Experience and Skills
Proven track record of senior leadership in sustainability, planning, or infrastructure. Extensive experience managing large teams, budgets, and complex projects. Strong understanding of UK planning law, environmental regulations, and climate policy. Demonstrated ability to lead change, drive performance, and deliver strategic outcomes. Excellent stakeholder engagement and partnership-building skills. Professional qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. land use planning, transportation, environment). Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. RTPI, CIHT, CILT). Desirable Attributes
Experience working within local government or public sector environments. Familiarity with major infrastructure projects and regeneration schemes.
