Are you an experienced Consultant Ophthalmologist seeking to combine hands-on clinical expertise with a meaningful leadership challenge? This is an exceptional opportunity to step into a Medical Director role with a progressive healthcare organisation renowned for its patient-centred approach and innovation in ophthalmic care across the North West region .
As Medical Director, you’ll provide visible clinical leadership across a network of ophthalmology services, supporting both NHS and private pathways. You’ll play a key part in shaping clinical strategy, enhancing service quality, and fostering a culture of safety, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities Lead the ophthalmology service, ensuring delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-focused care. Oversee governance, compliance, and clinical standards across North West sites. Maintain a regular clinical commitment to remain closely connected to patient care. Drive service development and pathway redesign to improve access and efficiency. Work closely with operational and nursing leadership to deliver strategic and performance objectives. Represent the clinical function with external partners, regulators, and commissioners. Support recruitment, mentoring, and professional development of medical colleagues. Contribute to national and internal quality and innovation programmes.
About You We’re looking for an inspiring, forward-thinking clinical leader who can balance strategic oversight with day-to-day clinical engagement. You will bring: GMC Specialist Registration in Ophthalmology. Significant post-registration experience in cataract and general ophthalmic surgery. Demonstrated experience (or strong aspiration) in clinical or medical leadership. Excellent communication, influencing, and organisational skills. Passion for patient experience, service development, and clinical governance. Understanding of national ophthalmology frameworks and reporting standards (e.g. GIRFT, NOD). Desirable: postgraduate qualification in leadership or management (MBA, MSc) and experience in private ophthalmology or service transformation.
