Operations Director (12-Month Maternity Cover)

Senior Leadership Role

We are looking for a confident and hands-on Operations Director to join a growing fire protection group on a 12-month maternity cover contract-with the potential to extend.

This is a strategic and operational leadership role, suited to someone who thrives in a fast-paced, multi-faceted environment. You'll oversee core business operations at their Essex office, help develop systems for new ventures-including a manufacturing facility-and play a key role in financial planning, HR, reporting, and company-wide optimisation.

This role is an exciting oppurtunity for an individual with a wide range of experience, as this role will include helping out and being responsible for various aspects of the Groups business.

Key Responsibilities

Office Leadership & Staff Management (50% of role)

  • Oversee a team of 15-20 office-based staff, including Admin, Coordinators, and Contract Managers

  • Manage and allocate workloads effectively, ensuring time and cost efficiency

  • Develop and monitor internal operational processes to support high performance

  • Handle recruitment, onboarding, and day-to-day HR matters, including staff development and performance

  • Act as the main point of contact for staff on internal systems and software support

  • Resolve operational challenges and provide on-the-ground problem-solving

Operational Development & Project Setup

  • Set up systems, processes, and resource planning for new client contracts, projects, and internal initiatives

  • Lead the implementation of operational software and training across group businesses

  • Support the operational integration of a new manufacturing site and also a potential facilities management division

Financial Oversight & Strategic Input

  • Work closely with the Finance Manager to:

    • Produce cashflow forecasts and financial performance reporting

    • Monitor client and job margins, cost controls, and budget adherence

    • Manage and escalate bad debt issues where required

  • Analyse financial reports to provide strategic insights to the Director and support sound business decision-making

  • Lead on renewing business insurance policies in a timely and compliant manner

Process Improvement & Reporting

  • Continuously review existing workflows to identify areas for improvement and automation

  • Introduce new processes or systems where needed to enhance reporting accuracy and operational efficiency

  • Create clear documentation for new and existing procedures to ensure smooth handover and scalability

Leadership & Business Support

  • Act as a trusted advisor to the Director, offering input on:

    • Day-to-day problem-solving

    • New business opportunities

    • Risk management and cashflow impact assessments

  • Help drive a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement across all departments

About You

  • Experienced in senior operational leadership-ideally within fire protection, construction, engineering, or a related industry

  • Adept at managing teams, resources, and interdepartmental operations

  • Strong financial acumen with a background in cashflow planning and budget oversight

  • Skilled in HR, performance management, and recruitment

  • A clear communicator and systems-thinker who can introduce, manage, and train staff on new technologies.
