Senior Director Design & Engineering.

Primary Purpose

The Software Director is responsible for defining and executing the software strategy, leading a team of engineers and ensuring the delivery of high‑quality, robust software solutions integral to our metrology products. The role requires a strong technical background, exceptional leadership skills, and deep knowledge of software development best practices across a cross‑functional engineering team.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Own a coherent software strategy and deliver new features while managing technical debt and aligning with other functions.
  • Manage software competence managers (C#, LabVIEW, Python), focusing on leadership across languages.
  • Work with architects to drive architectural design and development of scalable, reliable, maintainable software systems.
  • Ensure effective team management: career development, resourcing, recruitment, mentoring, training, appraisals.
  • Build and embed processes that support best practice and continuous improvement, including software testing.

Professional Skills & Abilities

  • 10+ years of team‑lead and people‑management experience, including 5+ years managing software managers.
  • Experience in machine‑tool software, desktop applications, real‑time control, or similar.
  • Experience integrating software with evolving hardware and partnering with cross‑functional teams.
  • Agile experience and application of lean methodologies in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Track record of implementing process improvements and continuous improvement.
  • Experience working with external partners in overall software delivery.
  • Deep knowledge of the software development cycle and programming best practices.
  • Desirable: high‑volume manufacturing (HVM) semiconductor industry experience; incorporating third‑party code to meet standards.

  • £75,000‑£90,000 salary (depending on experience)
