Purpose
The Technical Director will lead the Technical Fleet Team of 4 Ship Superintendents at Global Marine Systems, ensuring all vessels are operated to the highest standard of mandatory and statutory compliance, including classification society and Flag state regulations, ISM, ISO DOC requirements. They will ensure full adherence to Global Marines internal standards and policies. Committed to achieving industry leading performance, the Fleet Director will develop and manage a continuous improvement plan, demonstrating strong safety leadership, driving vessel reliability and consistently meeting customers expectations.
Key Deliverables
- Act as Vessel Emergency leader when the MD A&O is unavailable or where appropriate delegation to a suitably qualified subordinate.
- Manage all company-owned, managed, and chartered vessels and associated equipment; ensure MD A&O is informed of critical fleet operational issues that would affect business continuity or Safety.
- Ensure full compliance with legislation and maintain ISM and other international accreditations.
- Implement and verify ship management procedures by arranging vessel visits, inspections, conduct technical and safety audits, reporting and introduce corrective methods and measures as needed.
- Monitor and share findings from incidents or substandard conditions; drive corrective measures across the fleet.
- Manage the Technical Fleet Team, ensuring 24/7/365 fleet support and operational efficiency.
- Lead regular team briefings and meetings to ensure clear communication, alignment on objectives, and consistent reporting on progress and commitments.
- Oversee ongoing fleet budget management, including both OPEX and CAPEX, ensuring accurate monthly reporting to the MD A&O and timely submission of annual budget proposals by October 1st.
- Responsible for the overall ship management budget, covering all vessels and other identified assets. This includes reviewing and approving annual vessel operating budgets, as well as dry-docking specifications and any major repair work prior to tendering.
- Foster strong communication and alignment with company values across fleet and shore teams, while providing effective line and performance management of direct reports, supporting their motivation, development, and overall growth.
- Lead on all H&M and P&I insurance matters for the fleet.
- Directly responsible for supporting the companys ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) plan, while also managing the Group Risk Register and ensuring quarterly updates are accurately reported to the CFO.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders including purchasing and third party contractors.
- Approve orders, invoices, and payments within the authorised limit.
- HND or Degree level qualification in Marine/Engineering with membership of a relevant associated professional body.
- Minimum of 5 years senior sea-going experience.
- Minimum of 5 years senior shore-based experience within a ship management company.
- Proven track record of performance and leadership in the maritime industry.
- Strong commitment to safety as the top priority.
- Commercially forward thinking with a strategic mindset.
- Previous experience leading a team at Director level in the maritime industry.
- Sound knowledge of maritime legislation and regulatory requirements.
- Excellent organisation and communication skills.
- Confident in overseeing budgets in a senior operational role.
- Willingness and ability to travel at short notice with a flexible, pro-active approach.
- Experience of quality management systems and audits processes.
- Chief Engineer or/and Masters License having served at least as a 2nd Engineer or Chief Officer.
- Minimum of 5 years experience working with DP2 vessels in a senior marine engineering role within the telecom Cable Vessels industry.
- Strong understanding of the importance of crew welfare and morale onboard vessels.
