Overview
The City Surveyor’s Department, City of London Corporation, manages the property investment portfolio, corporate real estate, property/construction projects, and the day-to-day outsourced facilities management services of both portfolios. The City Surveyor is the organisation’s Head of Profession for Estates and Facilities Management. The City Corporation is supporting the relocation of Traders from the Smithfield and Billingsgate Market sites following a Private Bill and Royal Assent. Through the Regeneration and Development Group, traders will be assisted with securing locations, site development, and transition to enable their businesses to continue and minimise disruption to the supply and customer chains.
Royal Assent Historic Market Relocation
The City of London Corporation is seeking an engaging, agile, and progressive Assistant Director to join the Regeneration and Development team under its Director, Chris Bonner. This role involves working closely with the communities of Market Traders to secure new locations, facilitate contract arrangements with developers, and prepare for a seamless transition to the new sites.
This is a critical senior leadership role within our Regeneration & Development Team, ensuring that the City Corporation goes above and beyond its commitment to assist a highly complex set of stakeholders.
This role may be well suited to professionals specialising in the industrial and logistics sectors, especially those involved in union discussions or other complex stakeholder groups.
What You'll Do
- Lead on the appointment, management, and monitoring of internal and external consultants to assist and ensure that the Smithfield and Billingsgate Market Traders have a new location to move to.
- Ahead of the moves, ensure that an appropriate level of work is undertaken at both markets so that the City Corporation continues to operate safe, legal, and operable sites.
- Identify and secure new locations, and support the Traders in their pursuit of development partners.
- Ensure there is sufficient planning and preparation in advance of a seamless transition to the new sites.
- Ensure a minimum level of work is undertaken at both markets so that the City Corporation continues to operate safe, legal, and operable sites.
- Ensure the Food School operating out of the current Billingsgate site continues and best practices are ported across to the new site(s).
- Deputise, where required, for the Director of Regeneration & Development, attending Committee meetings, internal/external working parties, and representative groups.
What We're Looking For
- Demonstrable experience in negotiating with and influencing a complex array of stakeholders to achieve positive outcomes. Proven ability to strike deals including joint venture agreements.
- An understanding of the development process; identifying sites, appointing contractors and consultants, with management of key stakeholders and delivery partners ensuring delivery against agreed agreements and targets.
- An ability to convey complex situations to ensure understanding by senior non-property audiences.
- Strong political and organisational awareness with the ability to influence senior stakeholders.
- Excellent communication, risk management, and financial planning skills.
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams.
Why Join Us?
- Work within an organisation that is influencing major regeneration, community, and placemaking initiatives for one of the world's most iconic and complex public institutions.
- Lead on a significant initiative that has been granted Royal Assent and will define long-term change to the City of London.
- Join a collaborative and inclusive team committed to high performance and innovation.
- Benefit from flexible hybrid working and strong support for wellbeing and professional growth.
- Access a generous pension scheme, annual leave, and staff benefits.
- Help shape the future and create meaningful change across the Square Mile and beyond.
