Overview

Associate or Associate Director (Sovereigns) to join the Capital Structure & Rating Advisory (CSRA) team in London. You will support the CSRA Sovereign Advisory Head and collaborate with senior CSRA members, Relationship Managers and Product Partners to engage Sovereigns and Multilateral Development Bank clients on capital structure and ratings insights to support origination efforts. Scope includes tactical positioning with debt investors to optimise cost of capital, balance sheet management and funding considerations, policy planning, and ratings management.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy
The Associate / Associate Director supports the implementation of the Sovereign Capital Structure & Rating Advisory team’s origination, coverage and execution strategy.

Business

  • The CSRA team provides thought leadership, best practice insight, corporate finance and rating advice to corporate, FI and Sovereign clients. Content is driven by understanding client needs, sector trends and market themes to support origination efforts.
  • Identify client financial needs and solutions; prepare client-facing materials on debt optimisation, investor engagement, policy impact, contingent liabilities management, macroeconomic and political analysis, ratings, and related topics.
  • Develop understanding of external credit rating methodologies and support origination and execution of key rating advisory mandates.
  • Prepare financial models to simulate client situations and scenarios.
  • Conduct detailed research on clients, regulation and key financial and strategic themes.
  • Develop understanding of the bank’s products and offerings.

Processes

  • Maintain internal databases and pipeline; keep WIP and COOL list up to date.
  • Support pipeline and deal team management.
  • Keep Conflict of Interest register up to date.

People & Talent
Lead by example and foster the appropriate culture and values.

Risk Management
Proactively address regulatory, reputational and ethical matters; provide advisory input where appropriate and escalate as needed.

Governance
Maintain a current catalogue of work in progress and completed work using team tools and approaches.

Regulatory & Business Conduct
Display exemplary conduct and uphold the Group’s Values and Code of Conduct; embed high standards of ethics and compliance across the bank; identify, escalate, mitigate and resolve risk, conduct and compliance matters.

Other Responsibilities
Embed Standard Chartered’s brand and values in CSRA; perform other responsibilities as required by Group, Country, Business or Functional policies.

Key Stakeholders

Internal
Global Account Managers and Relationship Managers; Product Partners - Global Banking, Financial Markets, Transaction Banking; Economists; Risk Officer.

External
Corporate & Institutional clients; Rating agencies; other conference and media providers.

Qualifications

  • Experience in a similar role at a leading investment/commercial bank, advisory firm or rating agency; exposure to debt management, policy planning and sovereign rating topics with client-facing work.
  • Strong understanding of sovereign balance sheets; familiarity with rating agency methodologies and IMF guidelines/tools.
  • Client-oriented mindset with advisory/structuring experience and significant client contact.
  • Proficient in Excel, PowerPoint, data analysis, and research tools.
  • Understanding of corporate/investment banking structures and ability to navigate to deliver client outcomes safely.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to work across cultures in a dynamic environment.
  • Interpersonal skills to manage demands from peers and superiors; team-oriented approach.
  • French language proficiency is a plus.
