Join to apply for the Commerce Technology Director role at DEPT
London, hybrid
This position sits in our Experience & Engineering business unit. We primarily deliver large-scale website design and build projects, combining our skills in developing future-ready technical solutions with our expertise in creating beautiful designs to help clients including Nikon, London Marathon Events and END. We pride ourselves on delivering exceptional and engaging digital experiences.
Job Purpose
We are looking for a senior, technically grounded Commerce Technology Director to join our Experience and Engineering team in the UK. This is a critical role that will shape and support the future of our enterprise commerce practice, bringing together deep architectural expertise, sharp commercial thinking, and excellent communication skills.
You will play a vital part in our go-to-market efforts, working hand-in-hand with our growth team to win and deliver large-scale commerce transformation projects. Your focus will be on making complex technology challenges easy to understand, guiding clients through architectural decisions, and helping us build solutions that deliver real business value.
This is not a pure delivery or project role. It is about technical leadership at the intersection of strategy, sales, and delivery. You will be a core part of our growth team, helping DEPT win and define the next generation of digital commerce for ambitious enterprise brands.
As Commerce Technology Director, you will serve as the technical authority during the early phases of our client relationships. You will assess client challenges, shape technical approaches, design enterprise architecture strategies, and bring confidence and clarity to commerce transformation programs.
You will be a trusted advisor to our clients, helping them navigate an increasingly complex tech landscape and align their business goals with a flexible, scalable commerce architecture.
Key Responsibilities
- Support our growth and sales teams during early client engagements with credible technical leadership
- Lead the design of future-ready enterprise commerce architectures based on both best-of-breed and suite-based approaches
- Simplify complex architectural decisions for both technical and non-technical stakeholders through clear and compelling storytelling
- Translate business requirements into scalable architecture blueprints across the full commerce stack
- Guide technology selection processes in areas such as commerce engines, CMS, PIM, DAM, OMS, CDP, CRM, and iPaaS (in collaboration with SME’s)
- Collaborate with partners and platform providers to stay at the forefront of digital commerce innovation
- Mentor solution architects and senior engineers across our Experience and Engineering teams
- More than ten years of experience in designing and delivering enterprise commerce architectures, including full end-to-end implementations
- A background as a senior architect, solution lead, or technical consultant within commerce transformation programs
- Deep, hands-on knowledge of enterprise commerce technologies such as Shopify Plus, Commercetools, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, Centra, or others
- Strong understanding of the broader commerce tech stack, including CMS (e.g. Contentful, Storyblock, Optimizely), PIM (e.g. Akeneo, InRiver), DAM (e.g. Bynder, Cloudinary), OMS (e.g. Salesforce, OneStock), iPaaS (e.g. Boomi, Occtoo), CDP (e.g. Bloomreach, Segment, Hightouch), Loyalty (e.g. Talon. One, Yotpo), and CRM platforms (e.g. Salesforce, Klaviyo, Dynamics)
- Exceptional communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to engage both executive and technical audiences
- Experience in a client-facing pre-sales or consulting role, ideally within an agency or systems integrator environment
- A strategic mindset with the ability to balance long-term architectural vision with immediate business needs
- A strong grasp of headless and composable commerce concepts, MACH architecture, and modern integration patterns
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams including business strategy, product, design, and delivery
- A flexible, hybrid working policy (2 days from the office, depending on location).
- An excellent salary based on experience and equal pay policies
- Pension, free private healthcare, mental health support, and company sick pay scheme.
- 26 days paid holiday (plus UK Bank Holidays).
- Help getting you to work with a season ticket loan and cycle to work scheme.
- Enhanced family friendly policies to support new parents.
- Social and Cultural Events, plenty of opportunities to connect with colleagues through organised activities and celebrations.
- Inspirational Talks, bringing the outside in with regular guest speakers and events.
- Learning and Development, supporting your growth with continuous opportunities to learn and advance.
- Buddy Programme: You will be paired with a ‘Buddy’ to help you through your first weeks’ at DEPT.
- A reputation for doing good. DEPT has been a Certified B Corp since 2021 and named ‘Agency of the Year’ at both The Lovies and The Webby Awards.
