The Communications Directorate is central to the Home Office’s mission to keep the UK’s streets safe and borders secure. Effective communications helps ministers and the wider department deliver critical operations for the public, prepare for and respond to unexpected events, spot and mitigate risks and deliver services and support to the public – all of which ultimately supports the security and economic prosperity of the UK.

This is a pivotal leadership role at the heart of the Home Office, shaping how the department communicates its mission, values, and performance to internal and external audiences. The post holder for this role requires wide-ranging professional communications experience, fantastic relationship-building skills, a data-driven, audience-focused approach and a resilient, learning-orientated mindset as the basis of their professional and personal authority.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate their knowledge, experience, capability and behavioural approach to a high standard against the following key criteria:

  • An expert senior strategic advisor – Influence and advise ministers and senior officials to embed audience insight and Mission-led thinking to meet core internal communications objectives across Safer Streets, Secure Borders and National Security communications campaigns.
  • Campaign leadership – Design and evolve strategic campaigns aligned with departmental strategy and the wider Government Communications Plan. Support the director in using programme frameworks to set and maintain outstanding professional standards in campaign delivery.
  • Capability building – Lead effective performance management, promote learning and development, support staff retention and recruitment of diverse talent across one or more functional areas. Support the director’s continuous improvement projects linked to the Home Office’s role as a pathfinder department for Government Communications Service programmes.
  • Crisis communications – Lead communications teams in a crisis, with excellent awareness of the media environment and HMG crisis structures, with the personal resilience to provide direction and support over a sustained period.
  • Cultural leadership – Model and embed Home Office and civil service values across the function. Set the culture of the communications function and its role in supporting the Home Office’s journey to great and its collaborative, compassionate, courageous, respectful and curious values. Exemplify GCS and wider Civil Service propriety and ethics standards.
