The Director of Health, Safety Environment & Security (HSES) will support the Regional and Site Teams globally in reducing harm.
As Director HSES you will be responsible for collecting data on work conditions to monitor occupational health safety and environmental concerns; implementing and conducting evaluations of programs designed to limit physical, biological, ergonomic and environmental risks to staff, visitors, and the wider community.
The Director HSES will be responsible for the physical security at Smith Detection sites and for those who travel on company business. You will lead compliance advice and guidance applicable in the countries, states, and local authorities that the business operates. You will also support the sustainability efforts of the business ensuring projects and metrics deliver in accordance with the KPI agreed by their Line Manager and which will be linked to in year strategy delivery.
Summary of essential functions:
- Accountable for delivery of Detection Safety Strategy implementation.
- Engage appropriate stakeholders to ensure collaboration in development and full implementation of HSES policies and procedures to ensure regulatory and company-wide policy compliance.
- Develop training and audit/inspection tools to support robust local HSE program. Support specific HSES processes and procedures in support of company-wide initiatives and direction. Develop programs specifically designed to improve the HSES provision for the Site and Service teams.
- Develop environmental and sustainability programmes in line with Smiths Detection and Smiths Group strategic goals.
- Ensure the business has robust physical security programmes in place and the Smiths Group strategic goals are met.
Duties:
Health and Safety Responsibilities
- Accountable for compliance with Health and Safety programs, and with all government agencies and related regulations.
- Manage and track key Health and Safety performance indicators and drive improvements toward goals. Support problem resolution and provide leadership and guidance for the sites and service teams.
- Ensure the timely & accurate reporting of Health and Safety performance data, incidents, and corrective actions.
- Support execution of tactical initiatives to eliminate hazards and risks. Drive continuous Health and Safety performance improvement.
- Continuously assess Health and Safety hazards and risks and assist where specific technical expertise to meet local regulations or company policies, procedures, and programs is required.
- Plan and direct Health and Safety activities and programs; establish priority for project execution based upon site and service resources and cost of implementation.
- Actively participate in the investigation of significant Health and Safety incidents and ensure timely and complete implementation of corrective actions.
- Ensure development and delivery of focused Health and Safety training and education to the Site and Service team.
- Maintain regular interface with Group, Divisional, regional and site leadership, Health and Safety contacts, and inter/intra company contacts, to effectively communicate the status of Health and Safety objectives and performance.
- Support the Site-based staff with specific Health and Safety programs.
- Attend and contribute to Global Health and Safety committees, activities, calls, workshops focused initiatives etc.
- Assist with Health and Safety assessment and evaluation of potential mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures.
- Other duties as assigned.
Environmental and Sustainability Responsibilities
- Accountable for compliance with Environmental and Sustainability programmes, and with all government agencies and related regulations.
- Work closely with the Accounts lead for Sustainability to ensure that the Division and Group strategic goals are met.
- Manage and track Key Environmental and Sustainability Performance Indicators and drive improvements toward goals. Support problem resolution and provide leadership and guidance for the sites and the site teams.
- Ensure the timely & accurate reporting of Environmental and Sustainability performance data and track incidents and corrective actions.
- Support execution of tactical initiatives in order to manage the business Environmental footprint. Drive continuous Environmental and Sustainability performance improvement.
- Plan and direct Environmental and Sustainability activities and programs; establish priority for project execution based upon site resources and cost of implementation that meet both Environmental and Sustainability goals.
- Maintain regular interface with Group Environmental and Sustainability leaderships and ensure Divisional, regional and site leadership, Health and Safety contacts, and inter/intra company contacts, understand the objectives and performance.
- Support the Site-based staff with specific Environmental and Sustainability programmes.
- Attend and contribute to Global Environmental and Sustainability committees, activities, calls, workshops focused initiatives etc.
- Assist with Environmental and Sustainability assessment and evaluation of potential mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures.
- Other duties as assigned.
Security Responsibilities
- Work with the Group Global Security Programme Manager to ensure processes, policy and programs are in place.
- Develop and implement a security strategy that meets the expectations of Smiths Group, providing metrics to demonstrate progress Support the Global Security organisation in the sharing of current processes, best practices and capabilities.
- Provide an active and visible presence across Detections Global sites in establishing Smiths Group standards are implemented.
- Ensure that the Smiths Detection Division develops a physical security road map that ensures each location will meet the Smiths Group security categorisation requirements.
- Assist the Smiths Detection Global sites where specific technical expertise is required to meet local threats to property and personnel.
- In the event of a security incident, lead the team that investigates and mitigates the occurrence and liaise with the Smiths Detection legal team to ensure our compliance with any applicable national/international legislation.
- Work proactively with the Smiths Detection Global businesses and organisation to resolve issues and implement appropriate solutions.
- Ensure our US cleared and UK List X sites physical security provision meets requirement.
- Support and participate in Smiths Detection auditing and benchmarking programs.
- Work with outside contractors to ensure our travellers are provided with the best advice available and understand the risks involved in the travel undertaken.
- Review requests to travel to High and Extreme destinations, ensuring appropriate precautions are in place.
- Active participation in Security related organisations or trade associations to ascertain current industry trends and represent Smiths Detection’s interests.
- Work with Detection legal and Group Insurance to ensure required coverage is in place.
- Manage the Security SLIA programme.
- Monitor and respond to inbound security observation.
- Ensure annual site security validations are completed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Other Responsibilities
- Coordinate BCP efforts, ensuring they meet the business needs through regular testing.
- Interface with the property protection team to reduce site insurance risk
