Job Overview

Southern Water is entering an exciting new stage of transformation and investment, with AMP8 (2025–2030) marking a pivotal chapter in our journey. As part of this growth, we are seeking a Director of Health, Safety, Security and Wellbeing (HSSW) to lead a critical function that underpins the safety and resilience of our people, operations, and infrastructure.

This is a high-impact leadership role, accountable for shaping and delivering a forward-thinking HSSW strategy that ensures everyone goes home safe and well every day. You will lead a team of over 50 professionals across health and safety, physical security, wellbeing, data performance, and project management—including our 24/7 Alarm Monitoring Centre.

You’ll work closely with the Board, Executive Committee, and Senior Leaders to embed a culture of proactive risk management, compliance, and continuous improvement, while positioning Southern Water as a thought leader in the industry.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead the creation and implementation of a comprehensive HSSW strategy and annual plan focused on engagement, behaviours, risk management, compliance, and performance.
  • Oversee the design and assurance of the HSSW management system and governance framework.
  • Provide expert insight and reporting to the Board and ExCo on risk, compliance, and cultural performance.
  • Drive cultural change initiatives to embed a proactive, values-led approach to HSSW across the organisation.
  • Collaborate with supply chain partners and regulators to share best practice and influence industry standards.
  • Lead the development of a digital roadmap to enhance HSSW processes and reporting.
  • Ensure robust learning and development programmes, communications, and training across the business.
  • Manage the HSSW budget and ensure effective resource allocation and delivery.
  • About You

We’re looking for a tactical and passionate leader with demonstrable expertise in health, safety, security, and wellbeing—ideally within a regulated, high-hazard, multi-site environment.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in senior HSSW leadership roles, including engagement with Executive Directors and Boards and a proven ability to collaboratively lead high-performing teams and drive cultural and behavioural change.

In-depth knowledge of HSSW legislation, security standards, and best practice is a must, as is strong commercial acumen and the ability to balance compliance with business needs.

Preferably, you will be a Chartered membership of IOSH with a NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent), and experience working with critical national infrastructure and complex regulatory environments would be particularly advantageous.

    Package

This role will be full time Monday to Friday with a hybrid approach to working between our Head Office in Durrington (Worthing) approximately 2-3 days per week, and home working.

We are offering a competitive salary commensurate to skills and experience, a £600 monthly car allowance, company and performance-related bonus up to 30%, private medical insurance for you and your family, as well as other benefits including:

    • Generous pension with up to 11% company contribution

    • Life assurance payment equal to four times your annual salary

    • Health benefits through a Cash Plan

    • Two paid community volunteering days a year

    • 25 days annual holiday

    • Occupational health service

    • Retail and travel discounts platform

    • Study support for job-related qualifications

    • Enhanced maternity/paternity leave and flexible return to work options
