Economist (Associate Director) - competitive salary - London, United Kingdom (hybrid)


A leading global professional services firm is expanding its Economic Consulting practice, which delivers specialist economic advice to corporate, legal, and public sector clients. The Economic Consulting team works on high‑profile projects across sectors such as energy, telecoms, transport, and financial services, from advising on price controls and regulatory frameworks to assessing economic damages, ESG investment returns, and value‑for‑money considerations for major public initiatives. Flexible working options, including reduced hours and job‑shares, are also available to support work‑life balance.


The practice is building additional strength in advising on regulation and seeks economists to contribute to its expansion across a range of regulated markets. Whether bringing cross‑sector regulatory experience or in‑depth expertise in industries like energy, communications, water, financial services, or payments, candidates will play a key role in shaping the team’s growth.


Responsibilities


  • Lead regulatory economic projects, delivering high‑quality analysis across large cases or portfolios
  • Source and interpret complex data, build and challenge economic/financial models, and generate clear insights
  • Analyse regulatory and policy developments, assessing their impact on markets and efficiency
  • Support or challenge business plans with evidence‑based economic arguments
  • Prepare and present reports, memoranda, and presentations for clients and stakeholders
  • Maintain strong client relationships, providing updates and contributing to proposals
  • Identify business development opportunities, including creating thought leadership content
  • Mentor and support junior team members in their professional growth


Key Skills


  • MSc in Economics (minimum) and substantial experience in the UK regulatory sector (consultancy, industry, or regulator)
  • Proven ability to work with senior‑level clients
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience presenting complex economic arguments to diverse stakeholders
  • Understanding of regulatory frameworks and guidance (e.g., HMT Green Book, sector‑specific regulation)
  • Knowledge of one or more regulated sectors such as energy, telecoms, transport, media, financial services, payments, or water
  • Familiarity with price control modelling and regulatory finance
  • Experience conducting regulatory impact assessments and cost evaluations
