Group Safety Director

National Role with regular travel, hybrid working, 2 days a week in one of our offices or working in our communities.

Permanent, 37.5 Hours Per Week

Home, a place where you belong

Here’s one to get excited about. We’re on the lookout for a brilliant new Group Safety Director to lead our safety strategy with real vision, courage and purpose. This is no tick-box compliance role, it’s about taking an already strong safety foundation and embedding it even deeper into our culture. You’ll report directly to our CEO and work closely with our Executive and Board to strengthen how we protect and empower our customers, colleagues and communities ensuring safety is not just something we do, but something we believe in.

You don’t need a housing background; we’re more interested in where you can take us. If you’ve worked in a complex, regulated, asset-rich setting with a dispersed and diverse workforce, and know how to lead assurance at the highest level, we want to hear from you. It’s a rare opportunity to lead expert teams, shape strategic culture, and influence safety in a way that genuinely changes lives.

What you’ll do

  • Provide strong, independent second line assurance, risk oversight and strategic reporting to the Executive, Board and regulators.
  • Lead our Directors of Health and Safety and Building Safety, building a joined-up, forward-thinking second line team.
  • Drive cultural change, shifting safety from compliance to commitment and making it part of how everyone thinks and works.
  • Shape and refining safety governance, reporting frameworks and improvement plans so they deliver meaningful insight and action.
  • Act as the point person for regulators, from HSE to the Building Safety Regulator, leading confident, evidence-led engagement.
  • Champion inclusion, resilience and clarity across everything we do – from safety case submissions to internal audits and beyond.
  • Why choose us

Imagine finishing each day knowing you’ve made a real difference in our customers’ lives. That’s exactly what you’ll do here, working for a top 10 Great Place to Work in the UK!

    What you bring

  • Chartered status and significant senior leadership experience in health and safety, building safety or compliance.
  • A strong record of Board level influence in a regulated, multi-site organisation with complex risk and assurance needs
  • Experience leading safety or compliance culture change with a clear track record of embedding values led transformation.
  • Confidence working across senior leadership teams, building trust, offering challenge, and guiding strategic decisions.
  • Strong grasp of second line assurance, safety governance and risk frameworks and the judgement to use them wisely.
  • Passion for purpose led work and inclusive leadership, you create safe, empowered spaces where people feel heard and valued.
  • We’re sorry, but we can’t offer sponsorship for this role due to certificate limits. We do review this regularly.

    Our team

This is a senior leadership role where your voice will be heard, your expertise respected, and your impact felt across the whole organisation. Reporting to our Chief Executive, Mark Henderson, you’ll work closely with the Executive and Board, shaping decisions that matter and influencing how safety is lived and led at every level.

Mark’s not your average CEO, he’s a direct talker, a passionate advocate for inclusive, future-focused workplaces, and a proud “Toon” fan (we can’t promise you won’t end up hearing about NUFC or motorbike racing in meetings). With roots in Scotland and a focus on authenticity, Mark champions leaders who bring clarity, courage and collaboration and he’ll back you to do just that.

You’ll be joining a team that genuinely cares about people and purpose, with the space, support and trust to lead boldly and build something that lasts. If you want to feel part of something meaningful, and bring others along with you, this could be just the place for you.

    Job details

  • You’ll manage your own diary, so if you want to finish early to watch a school play, for a haircut or swim, you can use your flexi time to manage that!
  • This is a hybrid role, and you’ll spend 2 days a week in one of our offices, services or in our communities. Our Head office is based in Newcastle so if you are not local, you’ll need to visit us regularly.
  • You need an Enhanced DBS check done and we pay for that.
  • A place where you belong

We do our best work when we can be ourselves. That’s why inclusion and wellbeing shape our policies and daily practice. Our diversity networks, Multicultural, LGBTQIA+, Women, and Disability, along with peers and allies, help us thrive. Together we make Home Group a great place to work!

We’re especially keen to encourage your application if you are from an ethnic minority background, female, identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, or Queer (LGBTQ+), or if you are registered or consider yourself disabled. This is because these groups are currently underrepresented amongst our colleagues.

  • Enjoy 2 days volunteering, 34 days leave (this includes bank holidays and a "me day"!), increasing to 39, and the option to buy five days more.
  • Save up to £1140 yearly with our health cash plan, covering dental, optical, perscriptions and therapies.
