Job Description
The Director of Public Health (DPH) is a statutory Chief Officer post and is the Council's leading expert on public health, contributing to the development of a strategic needs assessment for the local population and accountable for the delivery of the London Borough of Hillingdon's responsibilities for health improvement, health protection and healthcare public health.
Contract: Interim - Start date ASAP
Salary: Competitive
Duration: 3 months + whilst recruiting for a permanent DPH
Flexibility: Ideally full-time, but potential to work 3/4 days per week for the ideal candidate.
We are seeking an exceptional public health leader to step into the role of Interim Director of Public Health. This is a unique opportunity to shape and drive strategic initiatives that promote the health and wellbeing of communities, reduce health inequalities, and ensure effective protection from public health threats.
As the statutory chief officer for public health, you will act as the principal advisor on all health matters to elected members, senior officers, and key partners. You’ll bring strategic leadership across the full breadth of public health: health improvement, health protection, and healthcare public health.
Key Responsibilities:

- Provide assurance that public health protection systems are robust and fit for purpose.
- Act as a trusted adviser and strategic partner across the local authority, health systems, and wider stakeholders.
- Deliver expert public health advice to integrated care boards, supporting evidence-based commissioning and service planning.
- Collaborate across sectors to ensure effective emergency preparedness, resilience, and response.
- Ensure responsible management of a substantial public health budget
Ideal Candidate:
You will be:
Registered GMC, GDC, or UKPHR public health specialist with substantial experience in all areas of public health practice.
Must meet minimum CPD requirements (i.e. be up to date) in accordance with the Faculty of Public Health requirements or other recognised body
Demonstrates knowledge of project management tools and techniques.
Deep understanding of public health policy and best practices at both national and local levels.
Practical experience in facilitating change
Budget management skills.
You will have:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills (including dealing with the media) including to present to mixed audiences and the media
- A strong track record of improving health outcomes in complex systems.
- Skills in strategy development, and stakeholder engagement.
- Political astuteness, with strong communication and influencing skills.
- Demonstrated ability to lead transformation and deliver measurable impact across systems.
You will be the strategic leader for delivering health improvements and health protection across the borough.
