Overview
The Key Accounts Director is responsible for leading and growing strategic relationships with both national builder's merchants as well as high-value national housebuilders and developers. This role plays a critical part in delivering sustainable commercial growth through long-term partnership development, joint business planning, and category leadership. Acting as a senior ambassador for the business, you will drive high-level engagement, influence customer strategy, and ensure value is delivered for both parties. Head office is in Doncaster, however, the role will require travel throughout the UK, interaction with other Sales Directors within the Sustainable Building Solutions (SBS) Business Unit and the SBS Commercial Director.
Responsibilities
- Own and manage high-level relationships with key national builder's merchants and major developers.
- Develop and execute tailored strategic account plans aligned with customer objectives and business goals.
- Lead annual negotiations, trading terms, and joint commercial agreements that drive shared success.
- Identify and unlock revenue and margin growth opportunities across both merchant and developer accounts.
- Deliver against strategic initiatives including product adoption, market penetration, and category expansion.
- Oversee commercial performance, forecasting, and P&L responsibility across your account base.
- Build strong relationships with senior stakeholders at builders' merchant and developer head offices—including procurement, commercial, technical, and operational teams.
- Act as the primary senior point of contact and escalation for all matters related to strategic accounts.
- Influence internal functions to deliver on customer needs, acting as the internal advocate for your accounts.
- Collaborate with marketing and category teams to deliver national-level campaigns and commercial initiatives.
- Support developers with specification strategies and product alignment to meet project needs.
- Monitor campaign performance and report on ROI, adjusting approach based on data and insights.
- Lead the key accounts team supporting each strategic account, ensuring alignment and accountability.
- Deliver accurate commercial reporting and updates to the leadership team on account progress, risks, and opportunities.
- Represent your accounts in strategic planning and business review meetings.
- Stay ahead of industry trends, customer strategies, and competitor activity across the merchants and developer segments.
- Use data, insights, and relationship knowledge to shape account strategy and challenge internal thinking.
- Represent the business externally at trade shows, industry forums, and customer events.
Qualifications
- Qualifications in relevant discipline; Business, Commercial, Science, Engineering.
- Proven sales executive experience, exceeding targets, preferably within the construction sector.
- Preferable experience of working within a manufacturing business in a senior sales role.
- Proven leadership skills managing a sizeable external salesforce.
- Proven sales executive experiences of exceeding targets.
- Experience of specification and channel sales in commercial building segments.
- Ability to communicate, present and influence at all levels of the organisation.
- Ability to analyse data and provide succinct solutions to presented trends.
- Excellent listening, negotiation, motivation, and presentation skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
- A full driving licence as travel to other sites is required.
- Commercial savvy with understanding of customer motivations linked to ability to develop tactics for negotiation and solution oriented business development.
- Proven experience of modern sales enablement tools e.g. CRM, digital marketing.
