Deloitte's Tax Controversy practice is experiencing significant growth, driven by the increasing complexity of the tax landscape for mid-sized businesses. We advise some of the UK's most successful mid-sized businesses and their investors, including prominent private equity firms.Our dedicated team of seven specialists focuses exclusively on privately owned businesses and private clients, offering unique expertise in:Traditional disclosure and enquiry work, penalty negotiations, and handling HMRC information requests.Pre-dispute crisis management.Pre- and post-transaction disclosures in collaboration with Deloitte’s M&A practice.Integrated work with forensic accountants and reputation management lawyers.This team is part of Deloitte's broader UK Tax Controversy practice—a team of 65 specialists covering all phases of dispute resolution, from pre-dispute governance reviews to litigation, across all major tax heads and a diverse client base ranging from multinational entities to high-net-worth individuals, trusts, and family offices.Job OpportunityThese roles (Experienced Manager and Associate Director) offer unique opportunities to lead and manage complex tax controversy matters for high-profile corporate and partnership clients. You will play a key role in shaping the future direction of our practice.Experienced Manager: Lead engagements, mentor junior team members, contribute to business development, and manage client relationships.Associate Director: Take on broader leadership responsibilities, including managing larger teams, developing new business streams, and playing a key role in shaping the future direction of our practice.Responsibilities for both roles include:Developing and implementing effective tax controversy strategies.Managing interactions with HMRC, including negotiations and dispute resolution.Advising clients on a wide range of tax controversy issues (audits, investigations, appeals).Identifying and mitigating tax risks for clients.Mentoring and developing junior team members.Contributing to the development of our tax controversy practice.Building and maintaining strong client relationships.Leading and managing engagements, including financial management and reporting.RequirementsEssential (for both levels):Existing tax controversy specialist – this role is for someone who is already working in the tax disputes world, either at HMRC or in practiceA deep understanding of HMRC's processes and procedures.Proven ability to manage complex tax disputes and negotiations.Interpersonal, and presentation skills.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.Experience in managing teams and developing junior staff (more extensive for Associate Director).A proactive and solution-oriented approach.Demonstrable business development experience, or technical leadership within HMRC (more extensive for Associate Director).Desirable (for both levels):Experience working with HMRC’s Midsize business departmentKnowledge of international tax controversy issues.Our Commitment to YouMaking an impact is more than just what we do: it’s why we’re here.
