As Technical Director you will play a key role in driving the strategic expansion of our shipyard and marine construction portfolio. Working closely with the Head of Special Risks and the lead Shipyards broker, you will help identify new opportunities, support client engagement and contribute to the development of tailored insurance solutions for shipyards and marine contractors.
The Role
Client & Market Development:
• Build and maintain strong relationships with shipyards and marine construction stakeholders globally.
• Act as a strategic partner to clients, understanding their evolving risk profiles and delivering tailored insurance solutions.
• Represent Willis in market-facing activities including client meetings, industry events and broker engagement.
Growth Strategy & Execution:
• Work with the Head of Special Risks and lead Shipyard’s broker to implement growth initiatives across the shipyard and builders’ risks segments.
• Assist in identifying and qualifying new business opportunities, including cross-sell and
• up-sell potential.
• Monitor market developments and competitor activity to support strategic decision making.
Technical & Commercial Expertise
• Provide expert input on policy structuring, pricing and placement strategies for shipyard/builder’s risks.
• Collaborate with underwriters to ensure optimal programme design and delivery.
Builders Risks Focus:
• Engage with shipyards, marine contractors and project owners to understand construction timelines, risk exposures and insurance needs.
• Lead contractual and coverage reviews, tailoring wordings for clients and prospects accordingly.
• Support the development of innovative insurance solutions for complex marine builds
• and conversions.
• Support the Head of Special Risks in aligning growth across the Special Risks segments with broader portfolio objectives.
Team Collaboration & Development
• Collaborate with colleagues across the Shipowners divisions to share insights and support best practices.
• Contribute to knowledge sharing within the team, particularly around shipyard and builder’s risks topics.
Qualifications
The Requirements
• Industry Expertise
• Demonstrable industry experience, particularly in relation to shipyards and builders’ risks.
• Deep understanding of marine insurance market dynamics, construction timelines and regulatory environments.
• Skills & Experience
• Strong analytical and commercial skills, with the ability to review and analyse complex risk assessments.
• Analytical mindset with experience in risk assessment and policy design.
• Effective communicator with the ability to engage internal and external stakeholders.
• Degree-level education or equivalent industry experience in marine insurance or related fields.
