Job summary
This post will provide an exceptionally dynamic, driven individual with an exciting opportunity to join and lead an innovative, growing NHS-based portfolio of ventures that work towards improving people’s lives and mental health in a financially sustainable way.
An interest in working commercially and creatively within the NHS, as well as an exceptional track record of commercial, strategic and operational delivery are essential, as well as a commitment to improving people’s health and lives. The post holder will report to the Executive Chief Commercial Officer, be part of the Commercial Enterprise Senior Leadership Team, and work closely with senior colleagues from within the Commercial Enterprise ventures, clinicians and senior leaders across the Trust and externally to develop partnerships to ensure high quality businesses and investments are created.
The primary purpose of this role is to:
Work with the Chief Commercial Officer to grow and develop Commercial Enterprise and its associated products, services and ventures.
Support the CCO in the delivery and iteration of the Enterprise Strategy and any Trust commercial developments and/or strategic projects.
Drive forward business developments and opportunities across Commercial Enterprise working across and beyond the wider Trust, aligned to Enterprise and Trust strategy.
Horizon scan internally and externally to develop the strategy and associated ventures based on innovation and activities within the Trust, our partners, and beyond.
Assist in leading the Commercial Enterprise team with particular responsibility for the development and delivery of the Maudsley Commercial Enterprise Business Plan and activity.
Act as an internal trusted advisor to the board, Chief Executive, SMT and Clinical Academic Group leadership.
Commercial Enterprise and ventures
Commercial Enterprise builds on initiatives going back more than 10 years and helps the Trust to fulfil our core purpose in three ways. First, to provide effective, responsive and efficient support services to our people on any commercial matters. Second, it takes to other organisations here and overseas via a range of platforms, the best approaches with which we serve people; and third it generates vitally needed investment to help us change the lives of people we serve.
Finally, Commercial Enterprise is entering an exciting time, with growing ventures and partnerships alongside new innovations emerging with commercialisation in mind. Consequently, this role represents a unique opportunity within the NHS to work across a diverse enterprise portfolio and drive forward the next exciting stage in our journey.

Key Responsibilities
- Commercial Strategy
Corporate responsibility for the development and the implementation of the Trust’s Commercial Strategy through Commercial Enterprise. Horizon scanning to identify commercial opportunities across the full range of public and private sectors with the ability to proactively set up, negotiate and seal deals that align with the Enterprise Directorate business plan. Lead the formulation of the business development strategy of the whole directorate within broader commercial objectives and be able to articulate, present and argue in favour of this plan across an array of forums including the Trust Board and external local and regional ICS and NHSE forums. Support the CCO in developing the Strategy for Commercial Enterprise and be able to independently articulate, present and argue in favour of this plan across forums. Lead on the gaining and development of new venture opportunities and operationalisation of new ventures as they come online whether from the public or private sectors both nationally and internationally. Support the separate venture Directors / Managing Directors from Maudsley Learning, Maudsley Development, Maudsley Private Care, Trust Learning and Development and other developing units in the development of their specific strategies. Support the development of robust market analysis (national and international) to identify, qualify and understand specific new and existing markets and market developments. Work with external partners within and outside the NHS both within and outside of the UK. Develop appropriate business operating models for Maudsley Enterprise in line with the strategy.
- Commercial Partnership management
Work with external parties to develop business opportunities for Commercial Enterprise, and be able to independently articulate, present and argue in favour of this plan across forums. Consult with and support CAG leadership in the development of strategic commercial partners. Ensure that the Trust selects partners on the basis of robust due diligence, market requirements, value add and trust-wide strategy. Relationship manage those partnerships alongside the CAG leaders. Provide assurance to the Board of management on income streams and risks, as well as accurate current position and forecasts.
- Commercial Contract Management
Provide focus towards exceptional contract management especially in tendering and running of contracts. Manage new and existing outsourcing, managed service and commercial contract planning and management.
- Commercial Finance
Work with the leadership of Commercial Enterprise to aid the financial modelling of opportunities, internally and externally, liaising with the Trusts finance department and financial roles within Commercial Enterprise. Support ventures/CCO in the development of internal business plans, challenging where appropriate and providing a liaison role between Commercial Enterprise and the Trusts finance department and executive. Lead the delivery of options appraisals and set up appraisal methods where required.
- Tender, Bid and Grant Management
Accountable for the overall delivery of formal tenders through the management of the Head of Operations and Bids, authorising go/no go bid decisions and running a highly professional and coordinated bid team delivering results in income growth and maintenance of existing services.
- Team Management/Development
Support the CCO and team. Provide advice to internal teams around commercial operations, intellectual property and commercialisation. Carry out coaching, development and performance management of direct reports and the Commercial Enterprise senior team. Lead on implementing the Trust’s anti-racism and EDI commitments across directorate work. Manage the Commercial Enterprise budget. Oversee IP management and the delivery of commercial skills across SLaM.
- Commercial Project Management
Lead and manage the development of non-NHS income commercial ventures, including structuring opportunities and benefit models (e.g., joint ventures and partnerships). Set these up with external advisors as required. Support clinicians and staff in developing ventures and generate related income and patents. Provide commercial insight into business cases and projects as required.
- Product and service development
Identify new business opportunities with clinical staff and senior managers and develop them through a process that screens and progresses products via commercial gateways covering market positioning, competition, costs, revenues, risk, governance, IP and promotion.
- Commercial Governance and Trust Committees
Prepare papers for, attend and present to the FPIC and ELT. Develop the Business Development agenda with the Chair of committees and the CCO to keep the Board appraised on progress.
- Information Resources
Manage information resources supporting IP documentation, in line with UK government guidelines. Ensure GDPR and information governance compliance across grant, tender and externally delivered work.
- Research and development
Understand how Trust business development may work with clinical and research activity, including representation in NIHR and translational business development.
Supporting data: Lead on pipeline data and tender submissions; identify opportunities for research and international reputation development.

Notes
As the portfolio develops and requirements for this role may develop/change, i.e. finance/business plans move to finance, project in concept phase may move into a venture, etc. This description provides a broad outline of the scope and responsibilities.
