Location:  Compton, Surrey Who we are Nestled in the Surrey Hills, Watts Gallery is dedicated to the life and work of Victorian artists and social activists, G F Watts and Mary Seton Watts. Set within an 18-acre estate, the Gallery showcases an exceptional collection of paintings, sculpture, and works on paper, alongside a dynamic programme of exhibitions, events, and learning activities. At the heart of the site is the historic gallery building, opened in 1904 to make art accessible to all—a vision that continues today through our inclusive, community-focused mission. Visitors can also explore the nearby home and studios of G F and Mary Watts at Limnerslease, as well as the extraordinary Watts Chapel, designed by Mary Watts and built with local villagers, embodying the founders’ belief in the power of art to inspire, uplift and drive social change. About the role Working collaboratively with the board of trustees, staff and volunteers, the Director will provide clear and focused leadership to shape a bold, creative and resilient future for Watts Gallery. With a focus on driving financial sustainability, accentuating our point of difference and developing current and new audiences, our next Director will be an enabling, proactive and sensitively progressive leader with a can-do and creative approach. Who we are looking for We are seeking an experienced leader, capable of driving empathetic modernisation and change, and who brings the vision, creative energy and commercial aptitude to safeguard the future of Watts Gallery Trust for generations to come. Reporting to the Chair of Trustees, the Director will lead the Trust to new heights, building on the successful transformation of the estate, and drive future projects to further establish Watts Gallery as a pre-eminent cultural destination. The successful candidate will bring the skills to clarify and articulate the Gallery’s identity, broaden awareness and engagement and galvanise teams, volunteers and broader stakeholders around a new vision for the future. The Director is also a Director of the Artist’s Studio Museum Network, connecting over 150 artists’ studio museums worldwide.
