As a Non-executive Director you will work alongside executives as equal members of our unitary Board who share responsibility for the Board's decisions and for the success of the organisation in leading the improvement of our healthcare services for patients.

Main duties of the job

You will chair the Trust’s Finance & Performance Committee, work across professional boundaries, provide challenge and fresh, multi-disciplinary perspectives internally, and play a critical outward-facing role in building the brand as a leader in musculoskeletal and orthopaedics within the wider system. As part of ROH’s current strategy rethink, you will support the development of commercial offerings and the culture & capability around continuous improvement.

The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a specialist hospital located in Birmingham, UK. It is one of the largest orthopaedic units in Europe, offering a comprehensive range of surgical and non-surgical treatments. The Trust’s annual turnover is around £136 million. Job Description

Job responsibilities

As a Non-Executive Director, you will use your skills and personal experience as a member of the community to:

  • Formulate plans and strategy – Bring independent judgement, external perspectives and advice on strategy, performance, resources and standards of conduct. Challenge, influence and help the executive board develop proposals to enable ROH to fulfil leadership responsibilities to patients and the local healthcare community. Help set ROH values and ensure obligations to stakeholders are understood and fairly balanced. Work across professional boundaries with multi-disciplinary perspectives to build the brand as a leader in musculoskeletal and orthopaedics.
  • Shape culture and capability – Ensure patients are treated with dignity and that the patient is central to decision-making. Promote a healthy culture, equality of opportunity, and open, honest governance. Provide visible leadership and ensure the board is a safe point of access for concerns. Ensure board members are fit and proper for the role and promote transparency.
  • Develop process, structures and utilise intelligence – Uphold probity, integrity and governance; monitor management performance against goals and statutory duties; ensure accurate financial information and robust controls; keep the Board fully informed; provide analysis and constructive challenge on performance.
  • Support engagement – Act in the best interests of patients and the public; be available to staff; maintain positive relationships with partners and engage with stakeholders and the media when appropriate.
  • Ensure accountability – Set challenging objectives, promote efficiency and effective use of public funds, provide scrutiny and challenge, participate in key committees, hold the executive to account, and contribute to remuneration decisions.

Qualifications

  • Qualified to Masters or equivalent professional qualification and/or experience
  • Evidence of continuous professional development

Skills & Knowledge

  • Business acumen and commercial awareness with ability to recognise risks and opportunities; demonstrates innovative and entrepreneurial skills
  • Excellent diplomatic, interpersonal and communication skills to engage diverse audiences and networks; inclusive decision-making
  • Ability to interpret national government policy
  • Knowledge of strategic NHS challenges and changing environment
  • Understanding of NHS performance measures

Experience

  • Collaborative, team-oriented style with equal accountability and voice from all board members
  • Strong strategic abilities, long-term planning, independent judgement, diplomacy and political astuteness
  • Experience at Board level or equivalent; understanding of corporate governance and assurance requirements
