Remuneration: Academic Level D; $185K- $204K pro rata based on experience + 17% Super+ Annual Leave Loading

Location: Kensington, New South Wales; Flexible for the right candidate

Key purpose and role

The Deputy Director plays a critical leadership role within the National Centre of Excellence in Intellectual Disability Health, working closely with the Centre Director, COO, and Consortium leadership to deliver the Centre’s strategic objectives. This is a research-focused leadership position with an applied and translational emphasis, involving engagement across academic, policy and service delivery settings.

The Deputy Director provides strategic and academic leadership across the Centre’s national programs and initiatives, ensuring alignment with the Centre’s values of inclusion, evidence and lived experience. The role includes leading key research and translation initiatives, managing a team of 3–5 direct reports, contributing to strategic planning, partnerships and external engagement, and representing the Centre nationally and internationally. The Deputy Director may act as delegate for the Centre Director when required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and academic leadership across the Centre’s national programs and initiatives.
  • Lead and manage a team of 3–5 direct reports.
  • Contribute to the Centre’s strategic planning, partnerships and external engagement.
  • Oversee integration of research, capability building and operational functions.
  • Lead major collaborations and funding initiatives.
  • Represent the Centre nationally and internationally; may act as delegate for the Centre Director.

Qualifications and Skills

  • A PhD or equivalent distinguished experience in public health, disability, health services, social sciences, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing teams and navigating complex stakeholder environments, including liaising between industry/government and higher education.
  • Significant track record in research leadership with high-quality, internationally impactful outcomes.
  • Proven academic excellence and outstanding contribution to research and scholarship.
  • Experience building engagement and partnerships with the profession and industry.
  • Experience recruiting and supervising high-calibre students.
  • Strong understanding of equity, inclusion and co-production principles, particularly with people with disability, First Nations people, or marginalised communities.
  • High-level communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work strategically and pragmatically in a fast-paced Centre environment.
  • Ability to contribute to the Centre’s strategic vision and manage change.
  • Demonstrated proactive, energetic leadership and ability to motivate diverse teams.
  • Ability to encourage staff to perform at their best and conduct difficult conversations when needed.
  • Commitment to equity, fairness and ethics to maintain a safe and respectful working environment.
  • Understanding of UNSW aims, objectives and values, and relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and willingness to undertake related training.
